Mexico's 'Palm Springs' on the
ocean!
|
Cabo has been called the Palm Springs on the ocean... it clearly
has become a world-class golf and tourist destination.
|
Its proximity and convenience is now drawing large crowds from the United States, largely California, Washington, Chicago, Alaska and Arizona. Each year, new direct flights have begun arriving from all parts of the U.S., Canada and other parts of the world including Japan.
Cabo is becoming a very large sporting paradise. Arguably the world's best deep sea fishing, it also is becoming an international's top golfing destination. Tourists from around the continent love the safety of the town, the Mexican atmosphere, its natural beauty, and the Eco-tourism features.
Cabo currently has three Jack Nicklaus 18-hole golf courses on the Sea of Cortez, the Palmilla, the El Dorado and the Cabo Del Sol. In addition there is a Robert Trent Jones 18-hole course called Cabo Real and La Querencia has an 18-hole course designed by the world famous Tom Fazio. Cabo del Sol, Palmilla and Cabo Real courses have already been sites of several Seniors PGA Grand Slam tournaments. Cabo del Sol, acknowledged as one of the ten best golf courses in the western world, is also known as the Pebble Beach of Mexico.
In addition to the above courses there are several other 18-hole courses scattered between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, one of which is the Cabo San Lucas Country Club, located only one mile out of town. Additional courses always seem to be in planning or under construction. It is clear that Cabo San Lucas is now becoming a world-class golf destination.
Seven large oceanfront hotels, the Fiesta Americana, the Ritz Carlton, Sheraton Hacienda, Hilton, Dreams of Cabo, Riu Hotel with 800 rooms and the Marquis Hotel from Mexico have opened their doors in recent years. Coming soon will be the Meridien Hotel on the marina with 60 deluxe suites, and the famous Mayan Resorts. A new and very exclusive marina is under construction in San Jose del Cabo. It also will be surrounded by condominiums, a golf course and a premiere residential neighborhood.
The town of Cabo San Lucas itself has a population of about 59,000 people. Nearby, 20 miles to the east, is the town of San Jose del Cabo, which has a population of 45,000. City officials are estimating that the population will reach 200,000 within the next few years.
A 90-minute drive to the north of Cabo San Lucas is the city of La Paz, state capital of Baja California Sur, with a population of 200,000. The area is otherwise very sparsely populated.
The hotel market in Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding area has been outstanding. The demand for Cabo continues to grow every year, with average hotel rates in excess of $200 per night during the high season, from November through June. In addition, hotels have had average annual occupancy in excess of 80%. This only seems to get better as Cabo continues to get incredible publicity in the United States, and more recently in Europe, through the trade agreement between Mexico and the European Community.
The municipality of Los Cabos seems to have new hotel permits under consideration on a continuing basis, as development in the area is showing no signs of decline, particularly in light of the Mexican government’s own intensive investment in tourism infrastructure. These factors have created what some U.S. periodicals are calling the “Baja Land Rush” and are making the holding of prime development property in the area very attractive.
